Description

TF 33 SW FOSDYKE OLD MAIN ROAD (north side) 11/29 Church of All Saints 26.1.67 II Parish church. 1871-2 by Edward Browning in C13 Geometric style. Red brick, ashlar dressings, slate roofs, lead covered spire. Nave with clerestory, aisles, chancel, south tower with spire. Ashlar plinth. West end has pair of 2 light lancets with trefoil over, with common cill and linked hood moulds, flanked by large stepped buttresses. Above a circular sexfoil with central trefoil. The aisles have single trefoil headed lancets. The north aisle has deeply dentillated brick eaves and stepped buttresses between the 4 three light windows with segmental heads. The clerestorey has 4 circular windows with quatrefoils. Vestry and organ loft has pointed moulded door. The east end of the vestry has a 2 light window with plain circle over. At the east end are 3 stepped lancets under common hood. The south side of the chancel has an ashlar corbel table and a pair of 2 light lancets with trefoils. In the east end of the south aisle is a plainer similar window. The south aisle has 2 three light windows matching those to the north, and the clerestorey matches that to the north. The southern tower is of 3 stages with stepped corner buttresses, plinth and moulded string courses. Above the corbel table a lead broach spire with gablettes in the four directions. In the sides are paired lancets with trefoils, with single lancets above and paired openings with mid wall shafts to belfry stage. The outer south doorway has shafted reveals and moulded trefoil head. The inner door is pointed, also with shafted reveals and moulded head. Interior: 4 bay nave arcades with ashlar round piers and foliated capitals and responds, double roll moulded pointed arches. Collared wall shafts to roof corbels. The west end has finely moulded rear arches with collared central shaft. At the east end of the north aisle a matching arch with carved responds to organ chamber. Tall chancel arch with triple keeled shafted reveals, foliated capitals and roll moulded pointed head. In the chancel north wall are 3 lancets with wall shafts and moulded trefoil heads. Beyond a pointed door with roll moulded surround. Rear arches of east windows are shafted and moulded. Tiled chancel floor. Fittings. Wood panelled pulpit on shafted ashlar base, wrought iron balustrade. C14 octagonal font with crocketed ogee niches to base and on the side panels heavily recut angels. C19 openwork wooden font cover. The church was built entirely at the expense of Rev. Basil Beridge, rector and lord of the manor at Algarkirk. Listing NGR: TF3150833335
