Description

SUTTON BRIDGE BRIDGE ROAD TF 42 SE (south side) 5/75 Church of St. Matthew 30.6.66 G.V. II Parish church. 1843. Knapped flint with ashlar dressings, some brick. Slate roofs with ashlar coped gables, ridge finials to porches and east chancel. Ashlar and brick plinth. Ashlar quoins. Tower, nave, aisles, north and south porches and chancel. Tower of 3 stages, the top stage set back, with bands. Ashlar parapet and diagonal buttresses. The tower is topped with a small square stair turret with ashlar parapet. West moulded arched doorway with hood mould and label stops. Above, to west, north and south sides are single pointed arched lights with flush ashlar quoin surrounds and continuous sill bands. Above, to the west side is a single lozenge ashlar panel with incised cross, to south and north sides are single clock faces. 4 arched bell chamber openings each with 3 pointed arched lights, hood mould and label stops. The stair turret with doorway with plank door to south side and single pointed arched lights with flush ashlar quoin surrounds and continuous sill bands to west, north and east sides. West wall of north aisle with single arched window with 3 pointed arched lights, hood mould and label stops. Continuous sill band extending to the north and east walls and broken by the porch. The south wall with single arched window with 2 arched and cusped lights surmounted by single quatrefoil in roundel, hood mould and label stops. To the left is the gabled porch with moulded arched entrance, hood mould and label stops. Side walls with single arched lights with hood moulds and label stops. Inner moulded arched doorway with hood mould and label stops. To the left are 2 similar 2 light windows with hood moulds and in the east wall of the aisle a single similar window and hood mould. Clerestory with 4 similar smaller 2 light windows. North chancel with single large arched window with 2 arched and cusped lights above and below a single transom and surmounted by single quatrefoil in roundel, hood mould and label stops. Diagonal buttressed east chancel with large arched 3 light window with cusped panel tracery, hood mould, label stops and continuous sill band. The south side of the church corresponds to the north side. Interior. 4 bay nave arcades with octagonal piers and chamfered arches. Chamfered tower and chancel arches. C19 reredos and decorative font. C19 roofs decorated with open tracery. Listing NGR: TF4786921204
