Description

TF 2669 HORNCASTLE EAST STREET (south side) 7/38 Church of the Holy Trinity II Chapel of Ease, now redundant. 1847. Stephen Lewin. Stock brick, limestone ashlar dressings. Slate roofs with stone coped gables and cross finials. Gabled west bellcote with pointed opening with flanking nook shafts with ornate capitals with chipstar decoration on head. Nave with west bellcote, north and south aisles and north porch; chancel with north vestry and organ chamber. Ashlar dressed plinth runs round the entire church. West fron clasped by north and south aisles, defined by gabled buttresses with chamfered corners terminating in triangular stops. Moulded string course runs beneath plate traceried west window with two lancets and quatrefoil. West fronts of north and south aisles each with single lancet with ashlar dressed head. Nave with regularly placed, squat buttresses. North side with gabled porch to west with pointed doorway of 4 orders, with 4 shafts on each side, all with crocket capitals supporting alternating orders of chevron and filleted rolls; hood mould, large head label stops and plank doors. Single lancet to west of porch. To the east of the porch, 2 pairs of lancets flank a single lancet. Clerestory above of 5 plate traceried openings, of 3 quatrefoils alternating with 2 trefoils. Gabled vestry to east with single curved triangular window and tall stack with 4 small gables each supported on 2 gargoyle heads. Chancel with regularly placed gabled buttresses with chamfered sides terminating in triangular stops. North side of chancel with a group of 3 narrow lancets. East end with 3 tall, narrow lancets, that in the centre, taller. South side of chancel with 3 lancets. East end of south aisle with single lancet. Nave with doorway to east with chamfered ashlar surround, flat head and plank door. To the west 2 pairs of lancets alternate with 3 single lancets. Clerestory above of 5 plate traceried openings, of 3 quatrefoils alternating with 2 trefoils. Church interior with west window decorated with chip star bands, nook shafts, hood mould and head label stops. 5 bay north and south arcades with polygonal west responds, octagonal piers and ornate corbelled eastern responds with large coats of arms and rich foliage; pointed, double chamfered heads. Pointed chancel arch of 4 chamfered orders with triple rolled shafts running down to large corbels with coats of arms, fruit and foliage. Vestry doorway in north aisle of nave with pointed roll moulded head with broad band of foliage, 2 slender shafts on each side with stiff leaf capitals alternating with rectangular jambs with foliate and human head motifs; hood mould and large head label stops. Pointed, double chamfered arch to organ chamber with moulded imposts. Chancel windows with clusters of nook shafts with shaft rings, ornate stiff leaf capitals and chip star bands on heads. Tie beam roofs, in the nave with plain moulded stone corbels; in the chancel with angel stone corbels holding books. Font with 8 squat shafts with ornate capitals which support 8 elongated trefoil headed arches with chip star decoratioin, spandrels rise up and merge with round bowl. Octagonal stone pulpit base.
