TF 34 SE FISHTOFT CLAMP GATE ROAD (east side) 12/23 Church of St. Guthlac 26.1.67 G.V. I Parish church. C12, late C13, C14, C15, 1853 restoration and vestry addition. Limestone ashlar, some render, lead and decorative tiled roofs. Clerestoried nave, aisles, western tower, chancel, south porch, vestry. 3 stage C15 tower with moulded plinth, 2 string courses, embattled parapet and stepped corner buttresses with blank shields. Belfry stage has single louvred openings with hollow chamfered surrounds. Middle stage single 2 light windows with quatrefoils and trefoil heads. On the south side a grotesque pig mask on a common wall stone. to the west a continuously moulded door surround with hood having human head stops. Above a 4 light window with brattished transom and hollow chamfered surround. Above again is a niche containing a carving of a saint beneath a crocketed canopy. C15 north aisle having large 3 light windows, triangular headed to the west, all with panel tracery, also a continuously moulded triangular headed doorway. Clerestory of 5 matching 3 light windows. To the north east angle of the nave is a stair turret with short spire and crocket. C12 rendered chancel with pilaster buttresses, now with C15 parapet. In the north wall a single round headed C12 light is flanked by single C15 3 light windows with panel tracery. In the east wall of the C19 vestry is a further reset C12 window. Splendid late C13 east window of 5 lights having 3 geometric circular panels to the head. On the south side are 2 C15 windows and a C12 shafted doorway with scalloped capitals and chamfered reveals, with immediately above a tall late C13 lancet with moulded hood. In the parapet a section of C12 carving with 3 small round heads. In the east wall of the south aisle can be seen a blocked pointed doorway. C15 south aisle with 3 three light C15 windows, with panel tracery,one with triangular head. Clerestory matches the north. Gabled C19 south porch, octagonal reveals and single chamfered arch. Beyond is a blocked window and to the west is a further C15 3 light window. C14 inner doorway, continuously moulded. Interior. 5 bay nave arcades, with C14 quatrefoil filleted shafts, having contemporary annular capitals on the south, but C15 chamfered capitals to the north. Both sides have double chamfered arches. Tall C15 recessed tower arch, now with chamfered corbels. C15 double chamfered chancel arch with octagonal reveals and chamfered capitals. On the north side are 2 blocked doorways to the rood loft. In the east wall of the south aisle is a blocked doorway with moulded reveals. In the north aisle are many fragments of round headed blank niches, probably from a scalloped corbel table. C15 nave and aisle roofs having reduced crown posts, moulded principals and ties resting on corbels with blank shields. Gilded angels and grotesque heads at the intersections. In the chancel, the rear arches of 2 further C12 windows can be seen in the north wall and late C13 Y traceried aumbry. On the south a C19 triangular headed piscina. Behind the altar a C12 round headed reliquary cupboard. C15 roof matches the nave, but has a brattished wall plate. Fittings. C15 fine oak chancel screen of 5 bays, the middle wider, and originally with doors. Brattished top, panel tracery with crocketed ogees. Donor and wife represented on central ogee. Restored C15 pulpit, octagonal, having moulded cornice, and crocketed ogees to the traceried panels. Good C15 octagonal font with elaborate traceried panels to bowl and stem, on double stepped plinth. Also part of a C14 font of the former St. Michael's Chapel, Fenne. At the west end of the nave, on the roof truss, a royal coat of arms in cast metal. 2 commandment boards on east wall of nave. Monuments. In chancel 2 mid C19 marble wall plaques in the Greek taste.
