Description

This list entry was subject to a Minor Amendment on 06/04/2017 Name and address changed from The Lodge, The Market Place to The Lodge, Market Place. FOLKINGHAM THE MARKET PLACE TF 0633-0733 (west side) 2/70 The Lodge (formerly listed as No 19) 30.10.68 GV II House. C17, late C18, early C19, late C19. Red brick, painted ashlar dressings, some painted rubble. Slate roof with stone coped gables, modillioned eaves cornice and gable stacks. 3 storey, 2 bay front with rubble plinth, first and second floor bands and quoins. Steps lead up to doorway on right with flanking ionic half columns, entablature with guttae and triglyphs, traceried overlight and panelled door. Glazing bar sash to left. 2 glazing bar sashes above and 2 smaller glazing bar sashes above them. All the windows with serpentine lintels and raised keystones. Carriage archway to right with flanking rusticated piers and iron gates. Glazing bar sash in C19 addition above, with wooden lintel. West side with doorway to left with bracketed hood and panelled door. Glazing bar sash to right with 2 glazing bar sashes above and 2 smaller glazing bar sashes above them, all with serpentine lintels and raised keystones. Single storey early C19 addition to right, projecting westwards. Very thick wall, probably of C17 rubble, divides house in middle at ground and first floor level. Mid C19 4 flight return painted staircase with 2 turned bannisters to each tread, carved tread ends and moulded handrail. Delicate openwork wooden arches above lower 2 flights with decorative keystones and pendentives. Stone flags on hall floor and doorway leading to rear of house with semi-circular head, moudled doorcase with keystone and traceried fanlight. Late C18 roof partially intact.
