Description
BRANT BROUGHTON AND STRAGGLETHORPE STRAGGLETHORPE LANE SK 95 SW (east side) 6/58 Stragglethorpe Hall GV II Country house. C16 restored and greatly extended in 1912-14 by Biddulph Pinchard. Close studded timber-framing with curved braces and coursed rubble with ashlar dressings. Plain tile roof, with 4 external moulded stone stacks with set-offs, a single moulded stone ridge stack, and 3 tall brick stacks. 2 storey plus attic. Truncated H-plan with service wing to west. Main cross wing and north front of service wing contain evidence of C16 house. Main south front has a 3 bay recessed centre, flanked by single bay gabled cross wings. The centre has a stone ground floor with 3, 3-light chamfered mullioned windows, and timber framing above with 3, 4-light projecting cross windows, and 3 triangular dormer windows above with 3-light casements. The stone cross wings have coped gables and quoins, with single 5-light chamfered cross windows on both floors with single 3-light chamfered mullion windows above in the gables. To the west the timber framed 2 storey service wing has an open loggia supported on wooden columns on the ground floor, with irregular casements above and a gabled cross wing to the west. The north entrance front, has a 3 bay centre with a 2 storey projecting porch to the west and gabled cross wing to the east. The centre has a stone ground floor with a central 4-light chamfered mullioned window, and timber framing above with 3, 4-light cross windows, the central one projecting, above 3 triangular dormers with 2-light casements. The porch to the east has a single 5-light cross window on the ground floor and a single 4-light cross window on the jettied upper floor with gable above. The 3 bay east front of the west cross wing has a small doorway and 2 3-light chamfered cross windows, and above, 2 3-light chamfered and mullioned windows and a single light window above the door. The service wing to the west has an irregular 4 gabled, 2 storey stuccoed front. Interior has a large C16 stone fimeplace in the hall, and an imported C17 staircase. Listing NGR: SK9132552103
