KIRKBY LA THORPE CHURCH LANE TF 04 NE (west side) 2/78 The Grange 1/2/67 G.V. II* House. c.1500, altered c.1620, mid C18, early C19 and C20. Coursed limestone rubble with ashlar dressings, timber frame, some red brick in English garden wall bond of 5, plain and pantiled roofs, raised stone coped gables, single tall brick ridge stack and ashlar C18 double square funnel gable stack with moulded cornice. A long range with a short projection to rear. 2 storey with cellars to right only, 6 bay front, the right hand 3 bays of rubble are added to a brick cased c.1500 timber framed hall block. To right a 6 panelled door with plain overlight in a wooden fluted pilastered surround supporting a flat leaded hood. Flanked by single large plain sashes, below the right hand window is a 3 light glazing bar sliding sash cellar light. To left is a tripartite plain sash window and 2 three light plain casements. To first floor are 2 plain sashes through the eaves to the right and 2 three light plain casements to the left. On the left of the main block is a single storey service wing with raised stone coped gable, 2 planked doors and single 2 and 3 light plain casements. Ground floor windows have wooden lintels whilst those to the first floor have plain ashlar surrounds. On a window cill to the right hand gable is a scratched date of 162_. C18 rear wing has a rubble base and chamfered ashlar plinth. A 3 bay front with first floor band, dogtooth eaves course and hipped plain tiled roof. To ground floor are 2 canted bays with double French doors and margin light sashes to sides, hipped plain tiled roofs. to first floor a C20 2 light glazing bar casement window is flanked by single glazing bar sashes, all with cambered brick heads. The rear wall of the hall block is of coursed limestone rubble to first floor height with earlier blocked fenestration of sub Medieval pattern. Interior: in the hall range there are jowled wall posts and the roof is of oak and has massive wind braces pegged to the purlins which are trapped by low collars which are themselves braced to the tie beams. The common rafters are also of oak and there is a ridge piece. There are 5 bays of this construction and there is a timber framed partition grooved to take the panels. Beyond are a further 5 bays of roof, also of trapped purlin construction but without principals. No evidence of smoke blackening. In the C18 rear range, the left hand room has a moulded wooden fire surround with cornice and a shouldered and eared over panel. It is flanked by single 6 panelled doors with semi-circular heads and broad architraves with fluted keyblocks. The room has a moulded' cornice. Listing NGR: TF0979146190
