Description

CRANWELL AND SLEAFORD ROAD TF 04 NW BYARD'S LEAP (north side) 7/21 Church of St Andrew 1.2.67 - I Parish church. Cll, C12, C13, C15, C17. 1812 north aisle rebuilt, 1903-4 restoration by C H Fowler. Coursed limestone rubble and ashlar, with ashlar dressings. Shallow pitch lead roofs to nave and north aisle, with a taller steeply pitched plain tile roof to the chancel, with ashlar coped gables and finials. Flush ashlar quoins. Nave and north aisle, chancel and north vestry, and south porch. West front has a chamfered plinth, 2 angle buttresses and a C17 deeply moulded and coped gable which rises in a curve over a bell opening and is topped with an obelisk finial. A single chamfered lancet and above a round arched, roll moulded bellcote. The north aisle west wall also has a single chamfered lancet the north wall has 4 chamfered lancets. The vestry has a chamfered north doorway and a chamfered 2 light mullion east windows. A tall ashlar stack rises from the north chancel roof. The chancel has to the east, a 3 light panel tracery window in a chamfered, 4 centred arched surround with hood, and to the south a similar 2 light window, plus a small chamfered and pointed arch priest's door. The nave south wall has a buttress with set offs to the east, then a chamfered lancet, and a 2 light pointed arched windows with reticulated tracery in a chamfered surround with a hood. To the west of the porch, is a 2 light, 4 centred arched window with panel tracery, in a chamfered surround with a hood. The porch has an ashlar coped gable and a plain tile roof. The double chamfered shallow pointed archway has inner responds with moulded capitals. The pointed arched inner doorway has a chamfered surround and moulded concave hood, plus a heavily restored C15 wooden door. Interior: 4 bay, round arched north arcade, the 3 bays to the east being earlier with chamfered and roll moulded arches, and scalloped capitals to the circular piers, and volute capitals to the responds. The fourth western bay is separated by a square pier, it has a double chamfered arch with a dogtooth band over, with moulded capitals to the responds. The double chamfered, pointed chancel arch has octagonal responds with moulded capitals and a hood. Various pieces of a Saxon cross decorated with interlace in the north aisle. C15 octagonal tub font. Restored C15 wooden screen, and restored C15 nave and north aisle roofs. C19 boarded chancel roof. C19 wooden pews, pulpit and reredos. Charity board in nave, established by Dame Margaret Thurold, late C17. Alabaster tablet in nave to those who died in the Great War. Nave and north aisle west windows contain fragments of medieval stained glass. The remaining windows have late C19 and C20 stained glass. Listing NGR: TF0327549975
