Description

TF 48 SE MALTBY LE MARSH MAIN STREET (east side) 5/29 Maltby Windmill II Three storey, tapering tower mill. Constructed 1841 by Saunderson¿s of Louth. Pitch-coated red brick. Late C20 replica fibre glass ogee cap with brick corbelling beneath. Double leaf timber door with segmented brick arch at ground, and C20 casement windows on first and second storeys. INTERIOR: First and second floor timbers and central timber shaft remain intact, but no other machinery survives. SUMMARY OF IMPORTANCE: Maltby le Marsh windmill is a rare survival of an early C19 tower mill, a once commonplace and numerous building type in the C18 and C19 which contributed to the rural English landscape. Despite the loss of much internal machinery, the mill retains some evidence of the corn-milling process within a comparatively little-altered structure. Listing NGR: TF4694682022
