WASHINGBOROUGH HIGH STREET TF 0170 (west side) 13/61 Church of St John 23.8.67 The Evangelist GV II Parish church. C13, C14, C15. Restored 1859 by Sir G G Scott and 1861-2 by Scott and Goddard. Western tower, nave with north and south aisle, south porch, north vestry and chancel. Coursed limestone rubble and ashlar with ashlar dressings. Lead roofs with coped gables with kneelers. Chamfered plinth and angle buttresses with set-offs. 3 stage tower has diagonal buttresses and south stair. West face has double chamfered, pointed arched doorway with double doors above 3-light pointed arched window. Second stage has clock face to east. Third stage has a single 2-light pointed arched bell opening to each face, with quatrefoil tracery. Topped by moulded battlements with 4 corner and 4 lesser crocketted pinnacles. Unbuttressed north aisle, west wall has 2-light flat headed window with lancets, north wall has 2 large, 3-light pointed arched windows with reticulated tracery. Clerestory has 4 windows to each face, each in a diamond shaped chamfered opening with cusped quatrefoils. Vestry north wall has shouldered arched doorway, flanked by single lancets with to left an external stack, east wall has a segment headed window with 3 lancets. Chancel east wall has a 5-light pointed arched window with complex reticulated tracery, south wall has 3 tall, 2-light lancets with flowing tracery, plus a small priests doorway with to left a small flat headed window. 2-light with tracery. South aisle east wall has 2 central, 2-light pointed arched windows with quatrefoil tracery, to right a 3-light pointed arched window with reticulated tracery, to left a gabled porch with a double chamfered pointed arch with double shaft responds, and inner chamfered doorway with double doors. INTERIOR: 4 bay nave arcades with double chamfered arches, round piers and responds, with varying capitals. Double chamfered chancel arch with triple shaft responds and shaft rings. Tall double chamfered tower arch. Sedilia and piscina in chancel. C12 drum-shaped stone font, much re-tooled. Sumptuous High Victorian Choir stalls from St Martins Lincoln. Wooden, baluster altar rail. fine C18 brass chandelier. Royal coat of arms. 2 fine, female demi-figure monuments, one in a cusped frame, the other trefoil recessed. Open pedimental wall monument, with carved decoration and death scene. Listing NGR: TF0185270632
