Description
GREAT GONERBY 494941 HIGH STREET (East side) War memorial in the churchyard of St Sebastian's church II War memorial. Erected in 1919. Designed by Wilfrid Bond and sculpted by Messrs Streather and Winn of Grantham and paid for by public subscription. It is built of Clipsham stone and consists of a floriated cross on a slim octagonal shaft, surmounting a plinth on a base of two steps. The plinth is inscribed with "1914-1918. R.I.P. Remember in the Lord those who gave their lives for Freedom" and with the names of those from the parish who died in the First World War. The names of the dead of the Second World War were subsequently also added. War memorials have a strong historical and cultural significance on both a local and national scale. This is a good example of a war memorial dedicated to the dead of the First and Second World Wars. It also has group value with the Grade I listed Church of St Sebastian.
