Abstract/Summary

Report on an archaeological watching brief, conducted during internal and external alterations to the Church of St Mary, Ludborough. The works exposed a red and black Victorian chequerboard tile floor underneath the existing floor, along with the remains of an earlier brick pew platform and vaulted brick heating duct. The foundations of the former chalk nave walls were also identified, and indicate the former plan of the church, prior to its medieval enlargement. The remains of two possible burials within the church were also recorded beneath the floor of the north aisle. These burials were not impacted by the alterations, and were therefore left in situ. The digging of the external pipe trenches exposed pieces of disarticulated human bones in the graveyard soil, along with a large quantity of post-medieval roof tile fragments.
