Abstract/Summary

Report on a programme of archaeological monitoring and recording conducted on the groundworks for a new toilet and servery facilities inside the tower of St Andrew's Church, West Deeping. The interior works required the removal of most of the tower floor, revealing a sequence comprising the current tile flooring with layers of brick and mortared stone beneath. A soil layer beneath the stone was exposed but not excavated. Finds recovered included modern pottery, 19th-20th century glass, three iron nails, and a copper fitting, possibly from a light. Two graves were also partially exposed; a floor timber above one grave was incised with markings that may have been letters, though no words could be identified. The exterior works revealed a deep subsoil, from which early post-Medieval pottery sherds a fragment of 18th to 20th century tile, and bones from an articulated cat burial were recovered. The trench to the northwest of the church revealed articulated human bone without a recognisable grave cut, which was left undisturbed in situ. A modern feature containing a deposit of slate tile was also encountered cutting the subsoil.
