HER Report no. 2728

Abstract/Summary

Report on an archaeological excavation, conducted following the discovery of a large, late Roman coin hoard on land at Rauceby. The hoard was found on the 9th of July 2017, with the discovery being reported to the British Museum's Portable Antiquities Scheme (recorded in detail as PAS object LIN-F6D516). The hoard had been contained within a greyware pottery vessel of the Swanpool type and capped by a piece of limestone, all placed within a pit with limestone rubble densely packed around the pot. The excavation recorded the findspot in detail, with a further small hoard of late Roman coins being found outside the pot, but within the limestone packing (also recorded as PAS object LIN-F6D516). The hoards appeared to have been deposited at the same time, perhaps in 307 or 308 AD.
