Abstract/Summary
Report on a historic building survey undertaken to preserve by record a barn adjacent to The Walnuts, Tallington, prior to its proposed conversion to residential use. The surveyed building is T-shaped in plan with a southeast to northwest aligned threshing barn adjoining a northeast to southwest aligned storage barn. The barn is one and a half storeys high, with coursed limestone rubble walls pointed with lime mortar. The gable pitched roof is covered with pantiles, and has been repaired in places with corrugated metal sheeting. The structure is in generally good repair, though the southeast elevation of the threshing barn has been repaired with breezeblock and a section of the roof has collapsed. The interior is open to the rafters and has few fixtures and fittings. It is floored with poured concrete, and a vehicle inspection pit has been added towards the southeast end of the threshing barn. The barn is believed to be of late 18th or early 19th century date. An undated photograph shows additional lean-to structures and a chimney stack on the roof ridge, suggesting that at some stage a portion of the barn was converted for use as a dwelling.
