Date/Year 2014

Abstract/Summary

Archive for the excavation of ten trial trenches, dug to inform proposed residential development on land off Scothern Road, Nettleham. The trenches were targeted to investigate a number of geophysical anomalies recorded by a prior magnetometry survey (see ELI12913). The trenching confirmed the presence of a concentration of quarrying pits, ditches and enclosures along the eastern boundary of the site, with artefacts of Roman date being recovered from many of these features. The remains of a Roman structure with a tiled floor was also recorded in the south-eastern corner of the site, linked to the main concentration of features by a probable trackway. The presence of former structures and concentration of features in this location would seem to indicate that Roman settlement activity occurred in this area.
