Abstract/Summary

I was particularly interested in the unusual spearhead from Washingborough. Bronze Age spearheads are my particular area of interest – I have written a BAR and two Praehistorische Bronzefunde books on the subject. The X-Ray of the spearhead shows two circular holes at the base of the blade rather than half moon “lunate” openings as described in the report. The key attributes of the spearhead are as follows:- 1 circular basal loops 2 a lack of loop plates 3 a wide curved blade base 4 short overall length (86 mm). These attributes are only matched in a small group of Irish spearheads (see attached Davis, R. 2006. Basal-Looped Spearheads. [International Series 1497]. Oxford: British Archaeological Reports. , Plate 1) They are dated to the Bishopsland phase in Ireland, and Taunton phase in Britain, in the Middle Bronze Age c1400-1250 BC. So, it seems likely that the Washingborough spearhead originates from Ireland. A number of weapons from the Rivers Tent and Witham have exotic origins.
