Abstract/Summary

Report on a topographical and magnetometry survey, conducted to investigate the remains of the medieval castle and settlement of Castle Carlton. The castle was thought to have been constructed in the late 11th century, prior to the separate establishment of the settlement as a new town during the 1220s. The village was heavily reliant on the local salt producing industry, and is thought to have significantly declined after this market failed in the late medieval period.
