Abstract/Summary
Report documenting attempts to obtain relative dating evidence for Palaeolithic sediments, sampled from sites in the lower Trent Valley. Amino acid racemization analysis was conducted on the remains of opercula (shells) of Bithynia tentaculata (a species of freshwater snail) identified in the sampled deposits. It was concluded that the samples from Tattershall Castle, Tattershall Kirkby Area 3 and three of the samples from Tattershall Kirkby Area 2 were of Marine Isotope Stage 5e age (roughly 109000 years to 123000 years before the present). One sample from Tattershall Kirkby Area 2 appeared to be older, clustering with Marine Isotope Stage 7 sites (roughly 191000 years to 243000 years before the present). The samples from Norton Bottoms, Coronation Farm, and Field House Brough (Notts) had higher levels of protein decomposition, consistent with a correlation with Marine Isotope Stage 7.
