Abstract/Summary

Report documenting attempts to obtain scientific dating evidence for Palaeolithic sediments, sampled from sites in the middle and lower Trent Valley. Optically stimulated luminescence dating analysis was conducted on samples taken from 16 different sites in the project area, with 7 of those sites in Lincolnshire. Despite some problems in the laboratory, meaningful age estimates were obtained for the majority of samples. The results obtained were all in broad agreement with the current proposed sequence of terrace formation and landscape development in the Trent Valley in Pleistocene times. They provided a much improved and robust chronological framework, and also demonstrated that this technique could be successfully used to date other sediments from this area.
