Full Description

Roman finds made in a field in Stainton le Vale beside the former RAF base of Binbrook airfield. Roman tile and pottery was reported from fieldwalking as well as some building stone. A quern stone of mill stone grit and four Roman column drums of Claxby ironstone were also reported. There are reports of coins also being found here. {1}{2} In 2015 three trenches were opened in the field by the University of Kent to investigate the site. A number of pits were found including one very large one with Roman pottery (including Samian), roof and hypocaust tile, oyster shells, copper working slag and Roman coins. The large pit was 2.3m deep and had been open during the Roman period but its use could not be determined. There was a ditch containing some oyster shell. One five metre wide pit contained Roman finds. Two corn drying ovens built of Claxby ironstone was identified with possibly a third. In one trench two square post pits were found that may have been for roof supports and a further corn dryer. The Roman stone building foundations that were found were well built. Other finds included a hob-nail, a pair of articulated leg bones from a sturdy ox, building stone, grey ware and Nene valley ware pottery, and part of a Roman finger ring with a green glass bead in a bronze mount. {2}
