Full Description

A three-bay, concrete anti-aircraft pillbox of the Second World War Coastal Crust. It is built into the embankment, and was accessed by a doorway and tunnel, built on the landward side of the sea defence. {1}{2} The pillbox was included in a survey of Second World War remains, recorded in July 2012 prior to works to renew the coastal flood defences between Tetney and Saltfleet. The structure was a type 23 pillbox with a central open bay for a light anti-aircraft machine gun position. It was set into the pre-existing sea bank, sideways on to the coast, rather than the more usual parallel position. More of the structure was exposed and recorded in October 2012, during the subsequent groundworks for the renewal of the flood defences. These works also exposed several iron barbed-wire picket posts immediately outside the structure, that would have formed part of the defences in this area. Some damage was caused to the pillbox during the works, however, when the roof was accidentally removed. A new concrete roof was cast, and the pillbox was repaired in September 2013. {3}{4}{5}
