Full Description

A cast iron water tap on Corby Road Irnham with a decorative lion's head and a griffin symbol on the front of the casing. The griffin symbol relates to the Benton-Jones family who came to Irnham Hall in 1901 so it almost certainly dates after that. The manufacturer is most likely to be Glenfield and Kennedy Ltd, a Scottish engineering company from Kilmarnock founded in 1899, that produced a number of items related to the supply and metering of water. The tap was a distribution point for piped water that came to various rural villages usually in the years between the two world wars (1919-1938). It is not known exactly when Irnham obtained a supply of piped water. These water points were used by the village community until mains water was piped to individual properties usually after the Second World War at which point they became essentially redundant. {1}{2}
