Full Description

The toils of the First World War, and in particular the Second World War, left Britain with an acute housing crisis; it was identified that 200,000 houses were destroyed and 250,000 left uninhabitable. In response to this, the government began a programme of providing new housing that could be built quickly and cheaply, resulting in the construction of large numbers of prefabricated buildings. These buildings were known as prefabs, and were constructed all over the country in the late 1940's and 1950's and were particularly common in densely populated areas. They roughly fall into two build categories, precast concrete, and timber-framed with asbestos panels and wool insulation. These buildings were built to fill an immediate need and were only intended to last approximately 10 years. In the 1960's many of these buildings were still standing but they have becoming increasing rare since then as they make way for more permanent accommodation. This prefab was timber-framed, but was demolished in 2012. Like many prefabs it had been extensively refurbished since it was built and retained little in the way of original features. {1}{2}
