Full Description

Two groups of pit features, associated with 9th to 11th century pottery, and a pottery kiln of late 12th century date were recorded during an excavation and subsequent watching brief in 2011, prior to development at the Dean's Building, Lincoln College. A pottery kiln and rake-out pit was found together with waste material from several pits within this area. The waste material included kiln furniture and wasters. The last firing of the kiln was in the last quarter of the 12th century and early Lincoln Glazed ware and Lincoln Fine Shelly ware were being produced. A pit located to the north of the kiln contained waste pottery and kiln furniture that was consistent with an 11th century date. The discovery of this kiln is significant evidence for the production of Lincoln Fine Shelly ware and early Lincoln Glazed ware in the city and is the first such kiln discovered in Lincoln. It is thought that production of this pottery had shifted to the countryside in the 12th century. This site shows that pottery production in this area continued from at least the 10th up to the end of the 12th century or even into the early 13th century. {1}{2}
