Full Description

A programme of building recording was undertaken for the walled garden and associated structures in Willingham Woods, in January 2011, prior to their proposed restoration and development. The walled garden represents a survival of the planned landscape around the former Willingham House, and likely dates to 1790, when extensive re-building works were conducted to the House. The walled garden is of a relatively small size, though it has an unusual plan form - the north-east and north-west walls are canted, and long wing walls are used to maximise the extent of the south facing aspect. The walls are largely of 9 inch brickwork, laid in Flemish bond. A number of workshop and greenhouse structures, now largely demolished or ruinous, were built onto the garden wall. {1}{2}
