Full Description
South Elkington United Methodist Free Chapel was built in 1898 to seat 80. The building is of red brick and has a gabled roof. It has pillasters, a plinth and stone cills. The window and door arches are pointed segmental arches. As of 2013 the chapel is disused and up for sale, although Shepherdson remarks that it was still in use when he last surveyed the chapel in 2010. {1}{2}{3}
The chapel was the subject of a programme of building recording, conducted in April 2015 to inform proposed alterations and a change of use to residential. The building is comprised of the main chapel room and a small toilet block extension, added to the north-west elevation. The main structure is built of red brick, laid in stretcher bond, and features a pitched slate roof and a small entrance porch to the north-east gable. A datestone inscribed 'United Methodist Church, 1898' is above the main entrance, and a series of limestone dedication stones and initialled bricks run around the lower courses of the building. The toilet block extension was added sometime between 1947 and 1968, and is constructed of red brick, laid in a mixture of Flemish and English Garden Wall bond, and features a monopitched slate roof. The building was well preserved externally, although many of the internal fixtures, notably the pulpit, had been removed by the time of the survey. {4}{5}
