Full Description

A programme of historic building research and analysis was conducted for the buildings located at The Forge, Black Barn Corner, Gedney, after their demolition in 2013. The buildings comprised a two-storey, brick-built cottage with slate roof. The main living room was to the front of the gruond floor, with a pantry to the side and kitchen to the rear. The upper floor had two bedrooms to the front and a bthroom to the rear. Attached to the western side of the cottage was a range of outbuildings, housing the remnants of a blacksmith's forge. The first room to the immediate west of the cottage seems to have been converted to use as a garage at some point, but likely was originally used as a shoeing bay for horses. The second room in the range was the former forge room, with the remnants of the brick hearth located along the eastern wall. Small rooms to the rear of the forge likely served as storerooms for fuel and other forge materials. Almost all of the portable elements normally expected to be found in a village sithy such as the anvil, cooling trough and tools seemed othave been removed, with the outbuildings largely in use as storage at the time of demolition. The exact date of the buildings is unknown, though cartographic evidence gives a date of construction sometime between 1841 and 1888. {1} The last blacksmith to live at and work the forge here was Joseph Kent, who occupied the property with his wife Eliza in the 1950s. The forge was converted to a private residence after Joseph's death in 1959, with all the portable forge tools and equipment being sold at auction then. The forge had been worked with a single set of bellows and one anvil. The space converted into the garage had indeed been the former shoeing bay, and had originally had a manger for feeding horses running the length of the rear wall. {2}
