Full Description

The remains of late medieval activity were recorded in this location in April 2013, during trial trenching on land at Elsea Park School, Bourne. Much of the site had been heavily disturbed by prior machine activity, though seven ditches and several pits were recorded, with associated pottery finds of Bourne ware, dating to the mid 14th to 17th centuries. {1}{2} Further stretches of one of the previously identified late medieval ditches were recorded in November 2013, during subsequent and more intensive archaeological investigation. The ditch had been previously dated to the 15th to 16th century, and was thought to be of agricultural origin. A single cattle molar tooth was recovered from the fill of the ditch, with an assemblage of 38 redeposited sherds of medieval pottery being recovered from the wider site. Although comprised of a range of different fabrics and forms, the pottery assemblage was strongly dominated by Bourne ware fragments, dating to the mid 14th to 17th centuries. {3}{4}
