Full Description

A building survey was conducted of the complex of light industrial buildings at Commercial Road, Alford, in May 2012, prior to their proposed conversion to housing. The site comprises a series of adjoining structures of mid-late 19th century date, and, although considerably altered and remodelled throughout its history, the complex represents a rare survival of these once commonplace structures. The original building on the site was the two-storey, brick-built structure occupying the north-west part of the complex, which was thought to have originally functioned as accomodation for the site manager. This structure was built of predominantly yellow bricks, laid in an English Garden Wall bond, and has a pitched pantile roof. Extensions to this initial building were built soon after, beginning with the workshop structure at the north-eastern side, and quickly followed by what was originally a freestanding workshop at the south-eastern corner. Subsequent additions of further workshop spaces infilled the open spaces within the complex. All of the additional structures were built in a similar style and using similar materials to the initial building, with the exception of the glazed storage area in the central part of the southern frontage of the complex. {1}{2}
