Full Description
Earthwork remains of medieval ridge and furrow to the south-east of Faldingworth, identified on aerial photographs by the National Mapping Programme. {1}
Further traces of medieval ridge and furrow were recorded in July 1999, during magnetometry survey of land at Grange-le-Ings Farm. The remains were recorded as a series of roughly north-east to south-west aligned, linear magnetic anomalies, to the north and west of the areas previously identified by the NMP. {2}
Part of the area of ridge and furrow previously identified by the NMP was recorded in August 2013, during magnetometry survey on land off Jubilee Avenue. The remains were identified as a series of parallel linear magnetic anomalies, aligned on a north-west to south-east axis. A further linear feature, lying at the northern end of the field and aligned perpendicular to the ridge and furrow, was thought to represent a former headland. {3}
Subsequent topograhic survey and trial trenching, conducted in October 2013, recorded further details of the medieval headland and ridge and furrow, previously identified on land off Jubilee Avenue. Both the headland and part of the ridge and furrow remains were cut by a hollow way of later, probably early modern, date. Two redeposited and abraded sherds of 13th to 15th century medieval pottery were also recovered. {4}{5}
