Full Description

Animal bones from the Pleistocene Era were found in a layer of fluvial gravel at a depth of about 1.2m during exploratory geological trenching at Fulbeck airfield. A total of 135 vertebrae bones were examined and other bones were also found. The remains were of three species, hippopotamus amphibius, dicerorhinus hemitoechus (Steppe Rhinoceros) and a bovid sp. (probably Bison). A small number of other bones could not be identified to species. The material is distinctive of the Ipswichian interglacial period, about 130,000 to 114,000 years ago, a period of warm climate with mixed oak forest and no evidence of human activity in Britain. Most of the bones were in good condition and could not have moved very far after the death of the individual animal; a small number of bones show extensive damage from rolling indicating they had been in a high energy riverine environment capable of moving large bones some distance. This well preserved Pleistocene site is of considerable importance. {1}{2}
