Woolsthorpe-by-Colsterworth is a small but separate hamlet within the parish of Colsterworth. Woolsthorpe is not mentioned in the Domesday Book and the earliest mention of the hamlet in medieval documents is in the late twelfth century. The name probably derives from the Old English personal name ‘Wulflaf’ and the Old Danish ‘Thorpe’, a secondary or subordinate settlement, thus meaning Wulflaf’s secondary settlement (presumably of Colsterworth. {1}
Population figures are hard to determine because the hamlet is normally included with Colsterworth in medieval and later documentation. Nevertheless it is returned in the 1334 lay subsidy with a value of £1 14s.8d. which is only just greater than half the average for the wapentake and so it was not a large settlement at that time. {2}
There were 9 households noted in the hamlet in the diocesan census of 1563. {3}
Woolsthorpe is not separated from Colsterworth in later census figures but even now it remains a small place. Its main claim to fame is that it was the birth place and home of Sir Isaac Newton in the 1640s. {4}
