Full Description

Woodbine Farm is an evolutionary farm which developed around three sides of a cattle yard which is open to the south. There is a separate cartshed combined with pigsties, a meal house and fowl house. It probably dates from the early 19th century, initially with a barn, stables and probably a granary. Later in the 19th century shelters for cattle were built and in the very late 19th century a cartshed was added. The farm probably dates to the early nineteenth century with the earliest building still standing on the site being a granary/threshing barn. The westernmost of the two storey structures in the north range is also one of the earliest surviving buildings on the site. It is red brick with a gabled pantile roof supported by tumbled-in bricks. The structure has undergone much alteration but it was probably originally a multi-function barn, the location with the cattle yard suggests that it could have been used as shelter with the first floor being used for storage of grain or other foodstuffs. This north range was extended at a slightly later date with a hipped roof, this may have been initially conceived as a stables and a further extension for cattle sheds. At some point prior to 1889 (as indicated on historic maps) the west range was extended to accommodate a root house. Also around this time a cart shed was built, the cart shed was amalgamated with pigsties and fowl house, this is slightly unusual as often the pigs and poultry were located close the farmhouse. In the 20th century the shelter in the north range was converted into a cow house and there are still fragmentary remains of stall divisions. {1}{2} Woodbine House, Gosberton. Partially extant 19th century farmstead. Regular courtyard with L-plan range plus detached buildings to the fourth side of the yard. The farmhouse is detached with the long axis facing on to the yard. There has been a partial loss (less than 50%) of traditional buildings. Isolated location. Large modern sheds are located on the site. {3}
