Full Description
Early medieval, medieval and late medieval activity was revealed in August 2011, during archaeological work at Blacksmith's Corner, Tattershall. The early medieval activity was represented by a ditch containing two sherds of 11th to 12th century pottery and cattle, horse and other large mammal bone. The medieval activity included a pit which contained fragments of 13th to 16th century roof tile and a pond from which peat was radiocarbon dated to 1280 to 1400. The pond was cut by later medieval activity including a large concetration of pits in two areas on the east and west of the site. Finds from these pit contained 13th to 16th century pottery, medieval roof tile, animal bone, ceramic building material, handmade brick, animal bones, an iron bridle fitting and other iron objects such as a knife and an awl. Two parallel lines of post holes were also identified. One post hole contained a sherd of 1450 to 1550 pottery. A barrel well still containing a barrel was also found. {1}{2}{3}{4}
