Full Description

The communications array for the receiving station of the Imperial Beam Station. A world wide wireless communication system for the British Empire was developed in the 1920s for fast communication between the separate parts of the British Empire. There were stations in Great Britain, Canada, Australia, South Africa and India. In Lincolnshire the Grimsby Station had a receiving station at Burgh le Marsh and a transmitting station at Tetney. The stations were extensive, over 200 acres, with an array of very tall masts over 200 feet high. The masts do not survive but some buildings of the stations survive in Burgh le Marsh and Tetney (1993). This HER record is for the mast of the receiving array. {1} The stonework footings of at least eight masts and the holdfasts of their supporting cables were seen on aerial photographs and recorded by the National Mapping Programme. The masts are about 200m apart and stretch in a line running approximately north to south for about 1500m. These masts were interpreted as being part of the Burgh le Marsh Beam Station array. {2}
