Full Description

Earthwork remains seen on aerial photographs and recorded by the National Mapping Programme. These have been interpreted as the remains of ridge and furrow, crofts and enclosures as well as a moat. {1} The large enclosure interpreted as a moat by the National Mapping Programme may be a relatively modern feature related to Skegness Water Works that was built on the site in the nineteenth century. {2}{3} Three adjacent areas of medieval ridge and furrow were recorded during an earthwork survey, conducted in 2014, to inform the proposed construction of a new primary school on land at Churchill Avenue/Burgh Road, Skegness. The ridge and furrow earthworks were very slight, and could only be seen when the overlying vegetation was low. Although adjacent, the three areas were separated by boundary ditches, visible as shallow earthworks, and formed three distinct fields within the wider medieval agrarian system. {4}{5}
