Full Description

Chain Bridge Forge derives its name from the now demolished footbridge that was adjacent to the building. There appears to have been an earlier smithy on this site which was set at a slightly different angle, this perhaps dated from the mid 18th century and it was, with the exception of the forge, entirely rebuilt about 1760-1780. In the late 18th century a two storey extension was built on the south side of the smithy and at about the same time a house was built on the north, requiring the blocking of an existing window on this northern side. Later alterations, possibly in the mid to late 19th century brick partition walls were added creating a separate room for shoeing horses which had a second forge. This forge was removed during 20th century alterations. Just before 1850 a sail makers shop and loft was built bounding the forge and shoeing shed on the north side. The building is built from handmade red bricks with some limestone with a pantile roof. The accounts of the port of Spalding for the period 1850-60 indicates that the blacksmith of Chain Bridge Forge was servicing boats there. The forge was owned, in the first half of the 19th century by Joseph Rose and was subsequently run and managed by Francis South. In 1899 the Forge was acquired by Mr George Dodd and it remained in the Dodd family until the late 1980s. {1}{2}
