Full Description

An Independent Congregationalist Chapel, erected in 1810, is found in the 1851 Census of Religious Worship. It is noted here that it is not on the site of a previous building. It is used at this time exclusively as a place of worship and as a Sunday School. {1} A Methodist Chapel (Independent) is marked in this location on the 2nd edition 25 inch Ordnance Survey County Series map. {2} A burial ground is marked on this site on the 1974 OS 1:2500 scale map. {3} Remains of the former burial ground were identified during a watching brief, conducted in June 2013, to monitor the groundworks phase of construction for an extension to 2-4 High Street. Several gravestone fragments were recorded, along with a cast iron memorial to Andrew Yuill, formerly the pastor of the Congregational Church at Newburgh, Scotland, afterwards a minister of the Gospel in Borough Fen who died in 1848. The monitoring works indicated that the burial ground was sited between the front of the chapel and the street. {4}{5}
