Monument record MLI98506 - Brick production near Goll Grange

Summary

Brick production near Goll Grange

Type and Period (1)

Protected Status/Designation

  • None recorded

Full Description

A total of 253 fragments of bricks were found during excavations, of which 33 fragments are vitrified and others are wasters. This amount of brick indicates brick manufacture was probably occurring locally. No brick clamp was recorded although the insubstantial nature of these kilns mean that evidence for their existence is often lacking. The bricks are manufactured from fine calcareous clay and are handmade using slop and sand moulding. These types of fendland brick are difficult to date but these are thought to be 15th - 16th century.{1}{2}
