Full Description

PRN 25740 Two phases of medieval activity were recognised during excavations, the earliest almost certainly representing salt making, and the second, land boundaries associated with an agricultural landscape (PRN 23892). Excavations recorded a ovoid shallow pit with two closely spaced rectangular pits both positioned immediately adjacent to an east-west aligned ditch. The fills of the ditch and pits were very similar and is suggestive that these features are contemporaneous. The pits contained sherds of late 12th to 13th century pottery, fired clay, some salt bleached and charcoal flecks. Environmental sampling showed the ditch contained burnt straw or cereal processing waste. The ovoid pit, measuring three metres long, one metre wide and twenty centimetres deep, contained salt bleached fired clay, 13th century pottery and the possible remains of a hearth. Pottery that was probably the fragments of curfews (vessels for covering embers on an open hearth) or fish smokers was found. The saltern, although dated as medieval more closely resembles some of the Iron Age/Roman saltern sites in this area. {1}{2}
