Full Description

A watching brief was undertaken on land that was, in the Roman period, part of the foreshore of the River Witham. There was no surviving post Roman archaeology on the site. Two Roman horizons were revealed containing second- to third-century pottery, roof tile, animal bone and environmental evidence that suggested the land was waste ground affected by periodic flooding and used for refuse and cess disposal. A fourth-century Roman coin and three timber stakes were also found. {1}{2}
