Full Description

Small country house. Late 17th century, alterations c.1727, 1875 and in the 20th century. Constructed in coursed rubble ironstone with ashlar dressings and rendering. Slate roofs with coped gables with stone coped gable stacks and a single stone coped ridge stack. Two storeys high with four irregular bays. The 17th century south-west front with alterations of 1875. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1} Allington Hall is a hotchpotch of bits from the late seventeenth century onwards. The grand east front put on after 1727 has been demolished. {2}{3} It was Thomas Williamson, rector of Westborough and Dry Doddington nearby, who purchased the Manor House (PRN 30144) and the Hall with their lands in 1674, and it was his descendants who built up the estate. The back of the Hall is probably seventeenth century - but the grander south front was obviously built upon by the Williamsons and became the principal house of the estate. The top storey was added in the early nineteenth century; it no doubt increased the accommodation required by a Victorian household, but it took away the charm of the earlier front. {4}
