Full Description

Thirty two trenches were excavated by Pre-Construct Archaeology Services on the site of the proposed Nocton Heath Dairy in March 2010. Pits were revealed which contained Iron Age pottery, fragments of animal bone and daub. One pit also contained fragments of human skull, fragments of a quern, a knife which may date from the late Iron Age or early Roman period and two flint tools [PRN 65740]. The flint tools were interpreted as objects that had been deliberately deposited in the pit during the Iron Age. The occurrence of these Iron Age deposits in an area that is otherwise barren of archaeological features suggested to the excavators that this site may be an Iron Age ceremonial location, especially given that fragments of human skull were present in the pits. {1}{2}
