Full Description

Two test pits were excavated by Allen Archaeological Associates in October 2010 at the Bishops' Palace, Lincoln. Forty three sherds of late 9th to mid 11th century pottery and eight sherds of late 10th to 12th century pottery were recovered. Four hundred and twenty five fragments of animal bone and a fragment of human bone all probably dating from the early medieval to medieval periods was also found. {1}{2} A watching brief was undertaken at the Old Palace, Lincoln by Allen Archaeological Associates in January 2011. A pit which contained oysters, mussels, animal bones, organic material, fifteen sherd of late 10th century pottery and twelve sherds of residual Roman pottery [see PRN 70138] and layers containing medieval pottery, animal bones and a worked animal bone point or handle were revealed. The pits were probably robber pits from when the area was abandoned. {3}{4} During excavation and a watching brief at the Bishop's Palace, Lincoln by Allen Archaeological Associates in October to December 2011, 10th, 11th and 12th century activity was revealed. During these centuries refuse and cess pits had been dug. These contained artefacts such as early medieval pottery, residual Roman pottery and an iron knife blade. One of the earliest pits contained fired clay, environmental evidence and burnt material suggesting that a granary may have burned down on the site. There was a hiatus in activity until the 13th century. Two drystone walls, evidence of a garden feature were revealed. {5}{6}
