Full Description
Two test pits were excavated by Allen Archaeological Associates in October 2010 at Bishop's Palace, Lincoln. Nearly seven hundred sherds of mainly 3rd to 4th century pottery, nearly four hundred pieces of ceramic building material and two tessera, all dated to the Roman period were recovered. Five sherds of glass which date from the 2nd to 3rd centuries, a fragment of scale armour from the 2nd to 3rd centuries, a copper alloy stud, a bone phallus pendant and a piece of worked bone all dating from the Roman period were also found. Two of the sherds of pottery showed evidence of the Roman glass making industry. The stone foundations of a Roman building were also revealed. {1}{2}
Archaeological excavation by Allen Archaeological Associates in October to December 2011 on land at Bishop's Palace, revealed evidence of eight phases of Roman activity on the site from the mid 1st century to the early 5th century. Over 4000 sherds of Roman pottery, 95 tesserae and 24 Roman coins were also recovered. The earliest deposits revealed the creation of a yard surface or terraced ground and a stone wall in the second half of the 1st century. A late 1st to early 2nd century kiln or oven flue was excavated. The kiln or oven went out of use sometime around the mid 2nd century when a large quarry pit was excavated through the yard surface. This quarrying was probably for the city defenses. Through the 2nd, 3rd and 4th centuries the quarry was used for refuse dumping. In the late 4th or early 5th century, a large pit was excavated through the foundations of the former wall and then backfilled with a large quantity of pottery. {3}{4}
