Full Description

A North American Aviation (NAA) P51C Mustang fighter aircraft crashed on land to the east of Owmby by Spital, on the 7th of June 1944. The aircraft was designated 42-103036 of the 555th Fighter Training Squadron, and was based at RAF Goxhill. It had been on a solo instrument training flight when it collided in mid air with another P51C Mustang from the same base. The right wing was torn off this aircraft, which sent it into a brief spin, before it levelled out and flipped onto its back. The pilot, Second Lieutenant R. Magnuson, managed to bail out of the aircraft before it crashed into a beck to the east of Owmby. The other aircraft, flown by Second Lieutenant C.R. Moritz, was sent into a violent spin, and crashed near to Saxby Lowlands Farm, killing the pilot (see PRN 56357). The remains of Magnuson's aircraft were recovered in the 1970s when the beck it crashed into was cleaned out and widened. {1} Some confusion as to the identities of the aircraft had been caused by the wartime reports of the crash, which had accidentally reversed the fates of the two planes in their records. {2}{3}
