Full Description

A medieval chapel at Claypole, dedicated to St Helen, was referenced in a document of 1401, when a chaplain is licensed to celebrate. An additional reference to a 'Chapel Field' at Claypole is made in a document of 1577. {1} A further reference to the chapel at Claypole is made in a document of 1405, when a licence was granted to 'John Prest of Claypole, priest, to celebrate divine services in the chapel of St Helen in his parish.' {2} A field named 'Chapel Close' is recorded in this location on the 1st edition 6" Ordnance Survey County Series Map. The field is still depicted, but not named on the 2nd edition 25" Ordnance Survey County Series map. It is thought that this was the probable location of the medieval chapel dedicated to St Helen. {3}{4}
