Full Description

The eroded remains of a shallow pit dug into the clay beneathe the sand were identified on the foreshore at Mablethorpe in September 1997. There is a possible small concentration of similar pits located a short distance to the south-west. Two animal bones, possibly sheep vertebra, and a block of dressed stone were found in the vicinity. These pits are possibly salt evaporation pans from salt working or are perhaps the remains of clay extraction for repairing sea defences. {1}{2}
