Neolithic stone axehead, found in 1965 in a ploughed field formerly part of Greetwell parish (now in Lincoln City). The axe is held by Lincoln Museum. {1}{2} The axe was thin-sectioned and found to be made from a tremolite form of jade known as nephrite. {3} [Note - the grid reference given in Cummins and Moore has been mistranscribed to give an incorrect location for the findspot as between Washingborough and Cherry Willingham. It should correctly be TF 003 711, as the HER has it]. It is now known that the stone used to make jadeite and nephrite axeheads in the early Neolithic period was quarried from high-altitude quarries in the Swiss and Italian Alps and northern Apennines. The axeheads were then exported from the Alpine region across the continent of Europe eventually reaching Britain and Ireland. {4}
